As announced by Starwood Lurker IV here (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/starwood-starwood-preferred-guest/1553539-annual-category-change-announcement-2014-effective-march-4-2014-a.html), there will be an Annual Category Change for 2014 [effective March 4, 2014].   We only have a short time to book some award nights before the changes go into effect!

Here is the announcement:

Our hotel Category adjustments for 2014 will soon be in effect, and we would like to provide you with an advance look at the preliminary list of changes. Please note that we are not adding new categories or changing category pricing.
Just over 20% of hotels are changing category, of these 56% are moving down and 44% are moving up. We want to make sure you’re able to maximize your Starpoints®, so please review the information to decide if it makes sense to redeem before or after the changes take place starting March 4, 2014. Please note that Category changes are always subject to change, and while we make every attempt to provide you the latest, most accurate information, there may be adjustments necessary before or after the March 4, 2014 date.

What does this mean for you?

For the most part, this is a balanced category change.  Many hotels in the US are going up a category.  Many hotels in Asia are going down a category.  The ones with the largest impact are in Hawaii – moving from category 5 to 6 are:

Other properties moving from category 5 to 6 are:

One property of note, the Sheraton Edison Hotel in NJ, is moving from category 2 to 3.  Weekend rates will sky rocket from 3,000 SPG pts to a whopping 7,000 SPG pts per night!  Its a great way to earn a couple extra stays toward elite status.

Check out the full list here – if your hotel is going up, make some award bookings using your points now before the rates go up.  If your hotel is going down, book after March 3rd to get the lower rate.
