iPhone 8 and iPhone X Pre-Order & Trade In Offers

UPDATE 9/15/17 9:42am – All pre-orders still available online with original ship dates.

On Friday, the pre-order ritual for iPhone 8 begins! If you don't want to wait for sold-out iPhones this year, here's what you need to know in one place. iPhone X pre-orders will have to wait until 10/27/17.

iPhone 8 pricing and offers have been rolling out. Verizon is offering up to $300 off with a trade in. AT&T has a nice Buy One Get One Free offer but you need to also be a DirecTV or U-verse customer also. TMobile is also offering a $300 trade in. Read about Sprint's new $0/month iPhone8 Trade in dealSprint is offering a trade in offer 50% off their 18 month lease which is really a discount about $262 ($14.58 * 18) – making Sprint's offer the lowest value out of the big 4. Details are below. *Added AT&T's trade in up to $300 but that requires a iPhone 7 Plus, which is a terrible deal in my opinion!

What I'd really love to see is the craaaazy free iPhone Trade In offer I wrote about last year “iPhone 7 for Free When You Trade In iPhone 6 (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, TMobile)”. The deal gave up to $650 for any iPhone 6 – much more than I could have sold it myself (see my old article on the best places to sell your iPhones).  Of course last year's price war was expensive for the companies so I'm not expecting the same this year. Would I upgrade my entire family plan if they did that again? You bet your @ss I would!

Questions? Are you planning to upgrade? What do you think of this year's offers? Ask or comment below.

PRE-ORDER LINKS & TRADE IN OFFERS

Apple

Most people compete for pre-orders with everyone else on apple.com. The lesser known method is to use the Apple Store App . Download it now because if you plan to wake up at 3 am to pre-order, you might forget what you need to do. The App will probably work after the website gets overloaded and stops working (they should give an advantage to existing apple users right?).

Trade-In: $300 credit on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus when you sign up for an Unlimited plan and trade in a newer premium smartphone. $200 or $100 credit for the older phones. You will get the credit split over 24 months. Specific eligible models are in the pic below:

iPhone BOGO Offer:  Buy One Get One Free! For the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (link). The catch? You need to be a DirectTV or U-Verse customer also. The details should be available on 9/15/17, until then here is the current iPhone 7 BOGO offer that expires 9/15/17 (pdf copy for safe keeping). Or Buy an iPhone on AT&T Next and get a 32gb iPad for $99.99 on a 2 yr agreement.

Prices:  (AT&T Next / AT&T Every Year)

  • iPhone 8 64GB:  $23.34 per month / $29.17 per month
  • iPhone 8 Plus 64GB: $26.67 per month / $33.34 per month
  • iPhone X 64GB: $33.37 per month / $41.67 per month
  • *Upgrade to 256GB for $150 extra

Trade-In: Get up to $300 in credit when you trade your iPhone 7 Plus or up to $200 in credits on other devices. This much less generous that Verizon which will take an iPhone 6S. I don't think that's a fair number considering I can easily sell it an iPhone 7 Plus on Swappa for double that! In face, broken and iCloud locked ones sell on eBay for over $200! On the plus side, it's an instant credit or gift card. You don't have to wait 24 months but that doesn't relieve you from the obligations of your contract!

iPhone 8 Offer:

UPDATE: Read about Sprint's improved $0/month iPhone 8 Trade In Deal.

“50% off the iPhone 8”. The words are a bit misleading, in my opinion. You have to trade in a phone and then you get 50% the 18-month lease payments, but you don't own the phone after that. TheVerge.com figured out the math and I think this should be called “38% Off The iPhone 8 Trade in Offer”.

Confusing? It's this kind of convoluted offer that I think will turn off customers and push them to their competitors. “Oh, what do you mean it's not 50% off? So it's just half off 18 months worth of lease payment and then I still need to buy out the phone or give it back after all those payments and still need to trade in a phone. Hmm.. maybe I'll just go across the street to the other company”.

Eligible Trade in Phones: Update 9/15/17 5:55pm – Sprint finally added the list of eligible trade in phones. They will accept as low as any iPhone 6 plus several android phones. See the list below I have seen conflicting information that an iPhone 7 is required and also that iPhone 6's are acceptable. A plus is that with “iPhone Forever” you can upgrade to the new iPhone every 12 lease payments.

Trade-In: Get $300 when you trade in an iPhone 6 or newer towards any of the new iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X. You will get the credits over 24 months on your bill.

Note that the new iPhones won't support T-Mobile's new LTE network. So, the nice coverage map on T-Mobile's home page is kind of useless.

Offer details:

Starting September 15, 2017, for a limited time, new and existing customers who purchase an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, 7, or 7 Plus can save up to $300 after trade-in via 24 monthly bill credits when they:

  • Trade-in a qualifying iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 6, 6 Plus, 6s or 6s Plus and purchase an iPhone 8, 8 Plus, 7 or 7 Plus on an Equipment Installment Plan (EIP). If you cancel wireless service, remaining balance on your smartphone may become due and you may lose credits; contact us for details.
  • Have or activate at least one voice line per device purchase.
  • Pay any applicable taxes, fees on the device, and down payment at time of purchase.

Trade-In:

  1. For Target REDcard holders only: Pre-Order a new iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus and get a $200 trade-in value on an iPhone 6 or newer. Get $120 in Target eGiftCards over the term of your 24 mos agreement**. That looks like a total of $320?
  2. On Verizon, you can get up to $300, which looks like Verizon's offer from above.

Trade-InGet up to $400! iPhone 7 gets $400 and $250 for an iPhone 6s. The website doesn't offer many details unfortunately. They are a newcomer to this and they are coming in giving you at least $100 more than the competition to get some attention.

Which iPhone 8 Trade In Offer Is Best?

  1. Gamestop's $400 trade in for an iPhone 7 is the highest of the bunch but you will have to do it all in a brick and mortar location. If you don't have an iPhone 7 to trade in, you will get more from Verizon and T-Mobile with your older iPhone.
  2. Verizon's $300 trade in offer is simplest and allows you to trade in a good range of phones to get it including an iPhone 6S.
  3. T-Mobile's $300 trade in offer looks similar except they will also take the iPhone 6, which would only get you $200 from Verizon. But since the new iPhones don't yet support T-Mobile's new advanced network, you won't be table to take advantage of the new fancy coverage map (the service will be as if the new coverage didn't exist).
  4. Sprint's 50% off Trade in offer is confusing and misleading. You don't really get 50% off as I mentioned above, but they will take an iPhone 6.
  5. AT&T's offer could be amazing – Buy One Get One Free, but you need to subscribe to their TV offerings (I don't know many people who still pay for cable or satellite tv). Yes, they also have a $300 trade in but you'll need to hand over a iPhone 7 Plus (I dont think many people own those yet and are still making payments).
  6. Target's offer isn't compelling enough to make me want to buy it from them. I rather just buy from the carrier directly. Interestingly, I can trade in an iPhone 8 and get a whopping $146.54! Wow, that's incredible!
