American Airlines posted a fantastic offer to quickly earn elite status, and quickly pulled it. It sounds like they didn't intend for so many people to sign up. In Lucky's post below, anyone who signed up before it was pulled may actually get it. Or maybe only of you were targeted by email, although the offer was posted on their website for all to see.
If it works, I will definitely be booking my next trip or two on American in order to qualify.

UPDATE – 8/22/13
I called AA today and found out that since I signed up for the supposed this “not targeted” promotion before it was pulled, I am eligible. They said it was targeted and they posted it on facebook with a limited number of sign ups. It happened faster than they expected…but I’m unlikely to fly the 6k needed to get gold. I considered buying AA flights to Peru over thanksgiving but their direct flight was on a partner (LAN) and it wouldnt have counted anyway. That and Mrs. Rewardboss wasnt able to sign up in time (obviously I should have done it).
