Updated on May 16, 2018
American Airlines is sending out targeted emails giving Free Platinum Pro and Gold status through Sept 7, 2018. It's free but not everyone is eligible. I tried a few accounts that didn't receive the email and those just get rejected. I have no idea why I got the offer as I generally just use miles to fly, but I'm get to take Platinum Pro status out for a spin for a few months. You must subscribe to the email AAdvantage Account summary to get this kind of email/offer but that doesn't mean you'll be targeted. If you haven't already, you can sign up for the emails on your profile alerts screen.

The benefits are all listed here and here, but below is a summary. Upgrades don't work on award tickets unless you are Exec Platinum. I was hoping to have change fees waived but that also is a perk only for Exec Platinums.

How long to update?
Mine updated instantly on the app and website though I believe it takes a few days to full register so you can use its benefits.
Can I status match to other airlines?
I'm looking into this and will update it later.
Both links did not work for me.
What happens when you click the link? You should see “Get free AAdvantage Platinum Pro status”.
If it doesn’t work you can just use the alternate link which goes directly to the login. But unless you were targeted, this won’t likely work.
Any update on the status match to anything?
Alaska is one that might work https://www.alaskaairstatusmatch.com/ though it says promotional status don’t qualify and it’s once per lifetime match. I’m not sure I’ll be able to use Alaska status before it expires so I haven’t done it yet.
I got the email directly from AA and when I tried to register it said my account isn’t eligible!
