Your Guide to getting started with Postmates

Postmates started out as a personal courier service that could deliver your lunch, pickup some toilet paper from the pharmacy, or pick up your ____ and bring it to you. The service is still mostly the same but specializes in food, grocery, and alcohol delivery. That means you can no longer press the custom item and fill out whatever you want – you have to choose the items from their menu.

How To Place Your First Order

First you'll need to download the Postmates iOS or Android app. Setting up a new account is very quick and you'll be ready to enter your address and search the restaurants and merchants. If you prefer to pickup your order, you can select that at the top of the screen.

LIMITED TIME OFFER: Use Promo Code “100PROMO” to get $100 delivery fee credit. Valid for new users only.

Postmates has expanded to every state in the United States so chances are good they are available in your city. The list of cities is included below. Postmates is the leading food delivery service in Los Angeles and competitive share in other major cities. Take a look at the chart below to see how Postmates compares vs competitors.

Food Delivery Market Share Oct 2019

How many restaurants and businesses does Postmates have?

Over 600,000 restaurants and businesses!

How do Fees work?

Unless you sign up for Postmates Unlimited service for $9.99/month or $99.99/year, you will be paying delivery and some other fees for each order. The delivery fee is $0.99 to $3.99 if the merchant is a partner or $5.99 to $9.99 for non-partners.  There is also a service fee which is a variable percentage, but I've noticed the fee can be up to 18%. There could be some other fees like a small cart fee of $1.99 if you don't order the minimum. So, if you're really craving 1 banana and need it delivered, it's not going to be cheap!

The fees will always show up in the app before you place your order.

Can I avoid the fees?

Yes, place a pick up order instead! You'll save on lots of fees and you'll get some fresh air. Just make sure you wear a mask and keep practicing social distancing.

What is Postmates Unlimited?

With a Postmates Unlimited membership you'll never pay delivery fees again! Free delivery on any order over $12. It costs only $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year. If you place just a couple orders per month, you're already saving.

Want to Invest in Postmates?

Postmates is still a private company so while it's not easy, there are still ways to invest in Postmates. The company delayed their IPO after some high flying startups launched their IPO which failed specularly – namely Lyft and Uber. You might be able to pick up some shares pre-IPO on platforms like EquityZen.com but Postmates may be looking for a buyer instead.

Where did this start? The company was started in 2011. Many venture capital firms including GPI Capital, Tiger Global, Blackrock have invested over $900 million. In Sept 2019, they had a post money valuation of $2.4 billion.
