Example of a reward flight on United (Go to Rome or Peru for FREE!)
Example 1: You can transfer 60,000 points to United and take a round trip from NYC to Rome in Sept. The flight there connects through Franfurt but the flight back is direct. If you paid cash you would pay around $1075 or $1,100 (direct both ways). See the screen shots below.

Example 2: You can transfer 40,000 points to United and get a round trip flight to Lima Peru. Many dates are available. This flight often costs around $1,000 but I'm seeing it for around $800. This is a value of 2 cents per mile. And you still have 20,000 points left over. A business class round trip would cost you 70,000 miles which start around $1,800 (a value of 2.6 cents+ per mile).
