Lyft Expands Free Rides to Cancer Patients in Major Cities

American Cancer Society Logo

Lyft and the American Cancer Society are offering free rides to people fighting cancer. The Road To Recovery program started a couple years ago in Boston and has been growing to other cities. Did you know that 3.6 million people miss or delay treatment because of transportation problems? Transportation is the last thing people should have to worry about – so thank you Lyft, American Cancer Society, and everyone else involved! Uber is also getting involved in medical transportation… maybe they'll partner with ACA as well?

How does It work?

I called to find out to help someone close to me. Its pretty easy and just requires a phone call to schedule.

  1. Check out the details on the American Cancer Society page.
  2. Call 877-227-2345. This is the America Cancer Society phone number – you can call on behalf of someone else. The first rep I spoke with wasn't too familiar but after I was transferred, I was able to get more real information.
  3. Tell them when and where you need a ride to. It's good to call a few days in advance, if possible, but not required.
  4. They will try to match you with a volunteer, if available, or they will call you a Lyft ride.

Where is it available?

  • Houston
  • Cincinatti
  • Las Vegas
  • Miami
  • Atlanta
  • Denver
  • Los Angeles
  • New Jersey
  • Philadelphia
  • St. Louis
  • New York City (if the ride starts from outside of NYC but getting back home is not available)

Who is eligible?

“Patients must be traveling to a cancer-related medical appointment.” Also, a caregiver may be required to accompany the patient, depending on the mobility of the patient.

How many rides can I get?

There doesn't seem to be any exact number but it depends on if they are able to match you with a volunteer and, if not, how much the Lyft rides cost. My guess is that for low cost rides, you can get as many as you need.
