Updated on December 14, 2023

9/5/23: The promo code is now worth $10. VIA no longer runs in New York City but does run in a several cities. The company doesn't maintain it's website well, but I can see they still operate in Jersey City NJ, Worchester MA, Wilson NC, Detroit MI, Birmingham AL, St. Louis MI, Tri-Cities WA, Arlington TX, West Sacramento CA, Cupertino CA, and Los Angeles CA.

1/18/19: Via, has brought back their $20 bonus promo code when you sign up by 1/27/19!

Via is regional ride-sharing company similar to Lyft/Uber based in New York City, Washington DC, and Chicago. For a limited time, certain users are targeted with a $20 referral code – see screen shot below. If you didn't receive this email below, then your referral is only worth $10, unfortunately.

YOUR REFERRAL CODE

You are welcome to list your referral code in the comments section below as long as you include a link to an uploaded pic (similar to the one above) showing you were indeed targeted for the $20 promo. For example, take a screen shot of your email and post it here, then share the link in the comments along with your referral. Please do not post if your code is only $10.

CAN I PAY WITH PRE-TAX DOLLARS?

Yes.

There is no tax added to the rides AND you can use pre-tax dollars. Via takes several different payment methods including TransitCheck, Commuter Check, Beniversal, WageWorks, and eTRAC.

Just be careful, as soon as you add such pretax funding methods to purchase ride credits, the “private ride” option disappears. And I have tried everything to get the private ride icon to appear again (including deleting that form of payment) but to no avail.

VIA vs COMPETITION

Via is started out as a pure ride-share shuttle, meaning there were no private rides. The company is becoming more similar to its competitors by offering private rides on certain routes. Be prepared to deal with other people sharing the ride or if you're in a rush, pay extra for the private option. In New York City, I love the shared ride option. It's an excellent (and inexpensive) way to get around!
