Starwood and Delta team up and offer crossover benefits

This sounds like a nice new perk.  I have Starwood Platinum but no Delta status.

  • Fly on Delta and get Starwood points, priority check-in/boarding, 1st checked bag free.
  • Stay in a Starwood hotel and get Delta miles and some platinum benefits

UPDATE 4/21/14:  So far, I've taken a couple Delta flights and on one of those occasions they had a monitor with a list of people on the upgrade waiting list.  My name was last on the list behind about 20 other people — so if all of those people were upgraded, I might have a shot.  I didn't hold my breath and I didn't receive an upgrade.  I was able to choose an exit row seat on one flight which I later found out was Economy Plus which is considered an upgrade — and a welcome one as I was flying from East coast to West.

Details below:

Take advantage of the best of both worlds — starting March 1, 2013, SPG® and SkyMiles® are taking elite travel to new heights with a revolutionary new benefit: Crossover Rewards™. Earn Starpoints® and get extra benefits when you fly with Delta; earn miles and enjoy added hotel benefits when you stay with SPG. This changes everything.

Crossover Rewards benefits are in addition to the current Starpoints and miles earned as a member of each program, making elite benefits even richer.

SPG Platinum and Gold members earn 1 Starpoint for every dollar spent on eligible Delta flights. Plus, SPG Platinum members enjoy elite benefits when traveling with Delta, such as priority check-in, Priority Boarding and first checked bag free.

SkyMiles Diamond, Platinum, Gold and Silver Medallion® members earn 1 mile for every dollar spent on eligible room rates at over 1,100 Starwood hotels and resorts globally. Plus, SkyMiles Diamond and Platinum Medallion members receive additional SPG benefits at Starwood hotels and resorts — 4 p.m. late checkout, access to the SPG elite check-in line, complimentary in-room Internet access and an upgrade to an enhanced room at check-in, when available.
